The Vanport Mosaic Festival

May 26 - May 29, 2017

To understand gentrification, we must first understand the history of housing discrimination and displacement.

To honor the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the city of Vanport, this year’s festival aims to engage Portlanders in an exploration of community histories around the themes of home, housing, migration, and displacement, inviting festival participants to reflect upon these key questions:

  • How does safe, affordable housing affect the wellbeing of communities?
  • How are the city’s unresolved issues with race-based displacement still reverberating?
  • How can we adequately honor the stories, experiences, and successes of people and institutions who were and are a part of Oregon’s living history?
  • How does acknowledging and celebrating our shared history deepen our sense of community and belonging?
