Jim Pepper was a Kaw-Muscogee Native American who grew up in Portland and became a world renowned saxophone player and musician. He died in 1992 at age 50.
The Jim Pepper Native Arts Festival is held in late September at Parkrose High School, in Jim Pepper's old neighborhood.
With an estimated 58,135 Native Americans representing more than 380 tribal affiliations, Portland is home to the ninth-largest Native American population in the country
